The Hawkeyes secured their second in-state commitment in three weeks Saturday, gaining a verbal commitment from 6-foot-6, 180-pound wing Chanse Creekmur of Marshalltown, Iowa.
Creekmur, who is beginning his junior year at Marshalltown High School, is the first player to commit to Iowa as part of its 2010 recruiting class. He made his commitment after taking an unofficial visit to the Iowa campus Saturday.
“After talking with the coaches, the decision was pretty simple. I’ve always wanted to be a Hawkeye. That’s been my dream, so to have the chance, it was easy to say ‘Yes,’ ” Creekmur said. “I feel like I’ll be a good fit with what they want to do.”
Under NCAA rules, Lickliter cannot comment on recruits until they have signed letters of intent, but during a visit to the Quad-Cities earlier this summer, he summarized his recruiting philosophy.
“We’re looking for players who will be good teammates, players who will complement one another within the team concept,’’ Lickliter said. “And probably first and foremost, we want players who want to be Hawkeyes. If they have that desire, if Iowa is where they have always wanted to play, it can beneficial for both parties.”
Iowa watched Creekmur extensively on the AAU circuit this summer after first seeing him play when his Marshalltown team reached the Iowa Class 4A state tournament in March.
Creekmur averaged 12.6 points and 4.4 rebounds for the Bobcats, shooting 50.5 percent from the field and 73.8 percent from the free-throw line.
Rated as a three-star recruit by Scout.com, he also had received recruiting attention from Iowa State, Washington State, Marquette, Butler and Creighton.
Creekmur is among three verbal commitments Iowa has from instate athletes.
Brennan Cougill, a 6-9 forward from Sioux City Heelan, and Eric May, a 6-3 guard from Dubuque Wahlert, have accepted two of the three scholarships the Hawkeyes have to offer as part of their 2009 recruiting class.

" They are going to need a McDonalds All-American to make that '09 recruiting class solid. I like to see how Lick is making a point to concentrate on in-state b-ball studs because we dont need to see another trio such as Hinrich-Collison-Korver go play at other out of state colleges. "

" Iowa's basketball program has been in a slump the last few years but it appears that it has turned the corner. But, when is the last time Iowa had a high school McDonalds All American? "

" Question for you Steve. Who do you think will be the 3rd recruit for the Iowa team for 2009? "
